What: Timothy Shriver, Chairman of Special Olympics International.
When: 8 PM, Monday May 7 (doors open at 7:30 PM).
Where: Ryan Family Auditorium, Technological Institute
Why: Mr. Shriver runs Special O. Also, it’s free.
How: By plane, train, automobile, bike, or foot. Tricycles not allowed.
Northwestern University to Benefit Special Olympics and College Democrats will be hosting Timothy P. Shriver, Chairman of Special Olympics, Inc., on Monday, May 7, 2007. Mr. Shriver is the son of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who founded Special Olympics in 1968 in Chicago. He has been the Chairman of Special Olympics for the past nine years. Mr. Shriver will be speaking on Northwestern’s Evanston campus at Tech Institute [2145 Sheridan Road] at 8pm. Doors will open at 7:30 PM. Mr. Shriver’s presentation will be followed by a brief question and answer period. Admission will be free to all who attend.
Special Olympics serves more than 2.25 million people with intellectual disabilities in 160 countries. Northwestern to Benefit Special Olympics is celebrating its 30th anniversary (1977-2007). We are the oldest and largest collegiate Special Olympics organization in the nation. We fund and facilitate the Illinois Area 5 Track and Field Meet, which serves over 650 Special Olympics athletes from north suburban Cook County and involves over 300 volunteers from Northwestern and the larger community. We organize over 100 Northwestern student coaches at 20 Special Olympics sites per quarter. We also provide many social and educational opportunities for Special Olympics athletes throughout the year and are committed to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in the Chicagoland area.
Free parking is available after 4 PM on the east side of Sheridan road in the lot in between Haven St. and Noyes St, as well as in the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion lot [2311 Campus Drive]. Overflow parking will be available in the Norris University Center parking lot, which can be located by taking a right on Campus Drive when driving north on Sheridan Road and bearing right.

Spring 5K to Benefit Special Olympics April 23, 2007

What: A 5 kilometer race.
When: 10 AM, Sunday, April 29.
Where: NU Lakefill; registration outside SPAC [2311 Campus Drive, Evanston].
Why: For god (Nike, the goddess of victory), for country, and for Special O. Our nation depends on your running shoes. We think Teddy Roosevelt said that.
How: Click this link to sign up for the 5K: Spring 5K Registration.
We invite students on campus and the residents of the Chicagoland area to join us in benefiting Special Olympics. Runners and walkers are welcome and top prizes will be awarded to the top runners for female and male participants. The race will begin at 10am, but registration and check-in starts at 9am. The registration fee is $10 for students and $15 for residents. The first 75 people to register get a free waterbottle. Bib numbers, water, and bagels will be handed out on race day. Please come with your confirmation number. Start your Sunday morning off by helping out a good cause and getting some exercise! All proceeds will go to benefit athletes with disabilities and hosting the Area 5 Special Olympics games. Northwestern University to Benefit Special Olympics is the nation’s oldest and largest student run collegiate Special Olympics organization. In May 2007 we will host over 600 athletes at our 30th annual tack and field games.

A Letter from the Co-Chairs March 5, 2007

This year, all of you have the wonderful opportunity to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the oldest and largest student-run Special Olympics program in the country. In celebrating this extraordinary achievement, we are inviting those involved in the first twenty-nine games to join us. We welcome all Northwestern alumni as coaches and volunteers and in helping us reach our fundraising goal of $30,000.
Our aim this year is to become more than just the Illinois Area 5 track meet. As evidenced by last year’s numerous social events and student-run seminar on intellectual disabilities, we are working to provide a more complete experience for athletes and students alike.
This organization could not exist without the dedication of all the volunteers, coaches, and committee members that put their time in supporting those with intellectual disabilities. The theme for this year’s Special Olympics is “Touch the Sky,” and it is our hope that current students, as well as those involved over the last thirty years, join us in making this the most successful year in the history of Northwestern Special Olympics.

Northwestern’s Special Olympics group is the oldest and largest student-run Special Olympics program in the United States. We work with Area Five of Special Olympics Illinois to host the annual Spring Track and Field Games. Many of our members coach Area Five athletes on a regular basis.
We also coordinate and organize many on-campus events for local athletes, including sports tournaments, a Valentine’s Day Dance, and an outdoor carnival.
Finally, Special Olympics Northwestern is responsible for raising the funds to organize the Spring Games, and events geared toward this goal include our 5K, a brand new Price is Right game show, and various local fundraisers in the Evanston Area.
